The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has said that professors in the Nigerian public universities will now receive a monthly top-up of N140,000.
Alausa made this disclosure on Wednesday while fielding questions in an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television monitored by DAILY POST.
He was speaking on the agreement stuck on Wednesday between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
“A professor will now receive a monthly top-up of over N140,000, as President Tinubu has created a new category of allowance for academic staff, known as the “professorial cadre” allowance, an enhanced additional package.
“Today, we have the funding to support the 40% salary increase granted to our lecturers across all our institutions, as well as the nine enhanced Earned Academic Allowances, which are now well structured.
“The beauty of any agreement is not as at the point of signing the agreement but the implementing faces of those agreements.
“Before Today, we’ve already started implementation. The chairman of national salary income and wages commission worked nights several hours between December 20 and 30 to ensure that the circular to back up the viewers welfare component of the agreement was released.
“That circular has been released and when we’re negotiating the agreement the president didn’t say he would not give any go-ahead to go and sign an agreement he knows he won’t implement,” Alausa said.
