President Salva Kiir Mayardit has directed the management of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) to intensify efforts in revenue collection and ensure strict adherence to regulations as stipulated under existing laws.
The head of state issued the directive on Wednesday after receiving a briefing on progress and challenges facing the Authority from the Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority, Mr. William Anyuon Kuol.
In a post on the official Facebook page of the Office of the President, Commissioner General Anyuon informed the President that the NRA has the capacity to collect sufficient revenue to cover government salaries, fund operational costs, and support other critical national development projects.
However, he said several challenges undermined effective revenue collection.
According to the Commissioner General, these challenges include undue and unnecessary tax exemptions, lack of cooperation from the business community and other taxpayers, as well as limited support from some key stakeholders.
Mr. Anyuon added that tax exemptions granted to a small number of wealthy individuals and entities have resulted in the government losing billions of dollars in potential revenue.
