JUBA, President Salva Kiir Mayardit was briefed Wednesday on the resumption of oil and gas production at the Heglig and Baboo oil fields and the payment of salary arrears to Nile Petroleum Corporation employees, Jan. 14, 2026.
NilePet Managing Director Emmanuel Athiei Ayual told reporters after the briefing that he informed the president of renewed production activities and the clearance of three months’ salary arrears for staff, a move aimed at improving employee welfare.
Ayual said the restart of operations marks a significant step toward restoring output in the country’s vital oil sector.
President Kiir reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting oil production as a key driver for stabilizing South Sudan’s economy, according to the statement.
Nile Petroleum Corporation, the country’s sole national oil company, plays a central role in South Sudan’s economy through its mandate to oversee oil exploration, production and revenue management.
