The Central Equatoria State Civil Society Network (CESCSN) has condemned the fire that destroyed several shops and goods at Customs Market on Monday, Dec. 1, 2025, expressing concern and sympathy for the affected traders.
CESCSN said the incident is a major setback for business owners whose capital and livelihoods were lost, and warned it also poses a broader economic threat to city residents who depend on the market. The group added that reduced revenue collections for both the Central Equatoria State and the national government could strain the provision of essential public services.
The network expressed sympathy to foreign and local business owners whose shops were damaged, urging them to remain calm as authorities investigate the cause of the fire. CESCSN acknowledged the police for launching an immediate investigation and called for a thorough assessment of losses and justice for the victims.
The group appealed to partners to support those affected. To prevent future fires, CESCSN urged the Juba City Council, the Central Equatoria State government, and relevant institutions to identify and address gaps in community awareness, early warning, and emergency response.
CESCSN also called on the public to practice responsible citizenship, stewardship and compassion to help protect people, property and the environment.
