Kasarani Locals Immortalize Raila Odinga With Road Naming and Statue Plans
Residents of Njiru in Kasarani Constituency have renamed a three-kilometre road “Raila Odongo Road” in honour of opposition leader Raila Odinga, celebrating his decades-long fight for democracy and unwavering commitment to uplifting ordinary Kenyans.
The newly christened road connects Njiru to Mwiki and serves as a vital route for thousands of residents. Locals say naming it after Raila is their way of paying lasting tribute to a leader they regard as a champion of justice, unity, and the people’s rights.
Speaking on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Njiru Residents Association Chairman Choke Goricha said the community made the decision out of deep respect for the Azimio la Umoja leader, describing him as a unifying figure who has always stood with Kenyans.
“Kwa sababu ya heshima ya huyo kiongozi, bila ubaguzi na vile alikuwa anashikilia wananchi, hawa wananchi wamejitokeza siku ya leo waweze kushuhudia jina yake ikiwekwa kwa hii njia,” Goricha said.
Residents who attended the unveiling ceremony expressed hope that the renamed road would remain a symbol of Raila’s enduring legacy and his lifelong contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey.
Local resident Victor Mujukua, noted that the renaming was only the beginning. He revealed that locals plan to erect a statue of Raila Odinga in Njiru as a permanent reminder of his influence and sacrifice.
“Tumeonelea tukuwe na Barabara moja ambayo siku zote tutatukuwa… Tuweke statue kubwa hata kama ni Njiru ili tukuwe tunakumbuka Raila Amollo Odinga,” he added.
Another resident, Alfred Ochudho, called on the government to rehabilitate the road so that it could serve as a fitting monument to the veteran opposition leader.
“Ningependa kuambia viongozi wetu, hasa gavana na rais William Samoei Ruto, atusaidie hiyo barabara itengenezwe ndio ikuwe makumbusho mzuri kwa Baba, na isaidie watu wengi wakaaji wa hapa,” Ochudho said.
Residents say the initiative is their heartfelt way of preserving the memory of one of Kenya’s most transformative political figures.
