ACCRA, Jan. 4 — All African passport holders will have visa-free entry to Ghana from the start of this year, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo confirmed Friday.
Delivering his last speech to the parliament before the end of his eight-year term, the outgoing Ghanaian leader said that the rationale behind the policy is to boost trade on the African continent.
“I am proud to have approved visa-free travel to Ghana for all African passport holders, with effect from the beginning of this year,” said Akufo-Addo.
He said the initiative is the logical next step to the Africa Continental Free Trade Area and the workings of the largest trading bloc in the world.
While opening the Africa Prosperity Dialogue in January 2024, the president pledged that Ghana would implement a policy to grant visa-free entry to all Africans visiting the country by the end of 2024.
Akufo-Addo assumed the presidency in 2017 and is set to leave office next week. (Xinhua)
