Addis Ababa, January 7 — Cuba’s ambassadors to Ethiopia, Meylin Suárez, and to the African Union, Lucas Domingo Hernández, recently paid a courtesy visit to the Namibian Embassy in Addis Ababa, the Cuban diplomatic mission announced.
Rodney Sikopo, the counsellor and deputy head of the Namibian mission in Addis Ababa, expressed gratitude for the visit and emphasized the strong bonds of friendship between Cuba and Namibia.
Ambassador Hernández underscored the significance of recent visits to Havana by Namibian Vice President Nangolo Mbumba and National Assembly President Peter Katjavivi. He highlighted these visits as a testament to the profound and historic solidarity between the Namibian people and the Caribbean nation.
Hernández also noted the deep-rooted ties forged through shared struggles and the enduring friendship between Fidel Castro, the iconic leader of the Cuban Revolution, and Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma.
During his visit to Cuba in December, Vice President Mbumba held official talks with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel. At a ceremony in the Palace of the Revolution, Díaz-Canel conferred upon Mbumba the José Martí Order, the highest honour awarded by Cuba.
The distinction recognized Mbumba’s invaluable contributions to strengthening the historic bonds of brotherhood between the two nations. Receiving the honour, Mbumba expressed deep gratitude and emotion, noting his pride in joining the ranks of other figures whose legacies have been commemorated with this prestigious award.
He also highlighted the significance of the José Martí Order posthumously awarded to Namibian President Hage Gottfried Geingob and the recognition granted to Namibia’s historic leader, Sam Nujoma. These honours, Mbumba said, symbolize the enduring friendship and solidarity between Cuba and Namibia.
